ArcGIS for Server Web GIS with a Disaster Recovery deployment in a different AWS region

Provision a web GIS deployment with an identical deployment in a different AWS region for geographical redundency.

The following steps will create a web GIS deployment with an identical deployment in a different AWS region for geographical redundency. The secondary deployment can be synchronized with the primary deployment periodically. For example, the graphic below shows a secondary highly available web GIS deployment running in a different region and synchronized with the primary deployment using the webgisdr tool that is installed with Portal for ArcGIS.

To configure this architecture, follow these steps:

  • Deploy a web GIS in one region using a CloudFormation template provided. It can be a web GIS on one instance, or a highly available web GIS deployment.

  • Use the same CloudFormation template to create an identical deployment in a different AWS region. Provide identical values for the properties asked except the region specific properties. For example, AZs, KeyName, and siteEIP can be different if requested.

  • Set up your domain name service with AWS Route 53. Configure Route 53 service to route to the primary deployment, and configure the secondary deployment with DNS failover. You can configure DNS health checks to monitor the health of the primary deployment and DNS failover to switch to the secondary deployment if the primary deployment fails. See Amazon Route 53 for more information.

  • Use the webgisdr tool to replicate content from the primary deployment to the secondary deployment periodically. This tool is installed under the tools folder with Portal for ArcGIS. See Configure disaster recovery for web GIS in the Portal for ArcGIS administrator guide for more information.
